as soon as Retrospect was closed BE started to work fine. yes the backup jobs and replicate jobs were scheduled to run not to overlap each other, yet, from time to time BE would choke. yes, it does the same thing on servers even if you login as admin on a different session.Дў) I had to use Retrospect and Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 on the same box. There are two things I don't like about it:ДЎ) If you are logged in as one user and are running Retrospect or it is just open, then login as another user, you then can't open Retrospect until the first user closes it. it also allows to nicely schedule your backup/replicate jobs, history, events etc. I also like their wizard for data replication, browse to where you want to grab your data on the network then browse to where you want to dump the data. you can do backups, duplicate and all kind of things with it. I use EMC Retrospect to replicate the data, it's not Free, but it is a good product. I will give you all mad props if you hook me up. The purpose of the data dump is for forensics purposes, so I don't think the government wants to restore stuff from a BKF file. It's a lot of work, but I've met my match here.

I guess the next thing I could try would be doing a full NTBackup and then restore the backup to the attached drive.

Does anyone know of any FREE software that is up to this task outside of using NTBackup to create a backup file (the only thing that works flawlessly). However, these files are so screwed up either because of special characters or long file names that they can't be copied. I'm just getting access denied and other errors even though I've propogated admin ownership on the entire share and forced inherited permissions on all child folders with no errors. The problem seems to be due to gigabytes of f*****-up files. I then turned to my trusty (not so) secret weapon, Richcopy, but even that hasn't worked-it just bombs out and closes when it runs into an error. Xcopy and RobocopyВ are faster, but they have the sameВ memory limitation as Windows file copy. I didn't use regular WindowsВ 2003В file copy because it's slow as crap and it bombs out on large files. I'm doing a large data dump project to USB hard drives and I'm having the damnedest time copying files over from my shares.
